Before anything goes downstairs, grab a flashlight and look over the floors, walls, corners, and window areas. Leave walking paths and breathing room around anything a plumber, electrician, HVAC tech, or future frustrated version of you may need to access.
Sort Items Before Stacking
The easiest time to organize basement storage is before everything gets buried. Group items by category, such as seasonal decor, tools, keepsakes, camping gear, sports equipment, and donations.
Use clear bins when possible, and label at least two sides so you can read them without performing basement yoga. Put the things you use most often near the stairs or entrance. Items that you rarely need can go farther back, but be honest with yourself. If you haven’t used something in years and can’t remember why you kept it, the basement doesn’t need to become its retirement home.
